Welcome to Daughters of The East.
This brand was dreamt up in February 2024 while I was on a visit to Vietnam. At the time, I was burnt out and searching for more meaning in my life.
That search led me back to a memory of my three-year-old self, popping in a freshly rewound VHS, perfectly timed to the scene where all the mice and birds gather to make Cinderella a beautiful pink dress for the ball. I was hooked on the joy of creating something beautiful as an act of love and care. I watched that scene over and over again.
It’s as if our souls crave what nourishes them long before we have words for it. The problem is we’ve forgotten how to listen.
Daughters of The East is me, remembering myself. It’s for the woman who’s over fast fashion’s empty calories. She is hungry for something that actually feeds her: history, meaning, and a little bit of spice. My hope is that you slip into a qipao and feel like the hottest, proudest, most unbothered version of yourself. Tradition is sexy when you own it. The qipao has been passed down for thousands of years, and now it’s our turn to play with it, rework it, and make it ours. Fashion with depth will make you beam in the mirror and think: damn, this is me.
I spent ten months chasing these two designs into being. There were months I wanted to quit, months of getting it horribly wrong, until the moment I finally got it right and fell in love. In a world where fast fashion churns out designs in weeks, I hope my intentionality and thoughtfulness come through in the designs, the website, and every word I wrote. This is truly a labor of love.
Please enjoy. This one’s for you.
xo, Liliana
